NOW Biotin
Promotes Healthy Nails. A factor in the maintenance of good health. Helps the body to metabolize proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. This supplement contains the maximum daily allowable dosage mandated by Health Canada. Biotin is a very popular dietary supplement, particularly among women who take it for hair, skin, and nail health, or during pregnancy.
Biotin is an essential, water-soluble B vitamin, sometimes referred to as vitamin H. Biotin is a key regulatory element in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and in the metabolism of some amino acids. Alongside its role in energy production, Biotin enhances the synthesis of certain proteins. Without biotin, certain enzymes do not work properly and various complications can occur involving the skin, intestinal tract, and nervous system with symptoms including dry scaly skin, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, mental depression as well as tongue inflammation and high cholesterol. Metabolic problems related to low biotin include very low blood sugar between meals, high blood ammonia, or acidic blood (acidosis). Recent studies suggest that biotin is also necessary for processes on the genetic level in cells (DNA replication and gene expression). Biotin deficiency, although rare, may result from long-term use of certain anti-seizure medications, prolonged oral antibiotic use, intestinal malabsorption, and eating raw egg whites on a regular basis. Marginal biotin deficiency has been found to commonly occur during pregnancy. Biotin deficiency generally responds well to supplementation.
