NOW Cascara Sagrada
With constipation becoming a growing problem with today’s diet of processed food devoid of fibre, plus a greater toxic load on the intestinal tract reducing function, Cascara Sagrada can provide a natural alternative to mainstream drugs and OTC treatments to promote regularity without the side effects. Cascara is obtained from the dried and aged bark of Rhamnus purshianus (Rhamnaceae), which is found in Europe and western Asia, and in North America, from northern Idaho to the Pacific coast in mountainous areas of British Columbia.
Cascara Sagrada can stimulate peristalsis, the squeezing action of the bowels, by affecting electrolyte balance and stimulating the smooth muscle of the intestine to help move waste through the intestinal tract. The active constituents of cascara are the anthraquinones. They are inactive in the gastrointestinal tract until they reach the colon; there they produce a soft or formed stool within about six to eight hours and cause vigorous peristalsis.
