NOW Kelp
A factor in the maintenance of good health. Helps in the normal function of the thyroid gland. Kelp products are frequently high in iodine content, and have been used traditionally for thyroid diseases. This easy to swallow powder contains 135 mcg of iodine per serving, while normal human iodine intake is in the order of 100-200 mcg/day. Thyroid disorders are on the rise, and nutritional status that supports thyroid function can help curb these health conditions.
The name kelp loosely refers to several species of brown seaweed that grow together along the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and the North and Baltic seas (e.g. Laminaria digitata, Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus, etc.). Seaweed has been used medicinally in China for over 5000 years. Kelp species were used in the 18th century as a major dietary source of iodine, and have been used traditionally to treat goiter. Chronic iodine deficiency can lead to numerous health problems in children and adults, including thyroid gland dysfunction (including goiter) and various neurologic, gastrointestinal, and skin abnormalities. Iodine deficiency in pregnant or nursing mothers can lead to significant neurocognitive deficits in their infants. Iodine deficiency is rare in industrialized countries such as Canada, due to the enrichment of table salt and cattle feed with iodine, but those who avoid these predominant food sources or have a hypoactive thyroid may wish to supplement with this natural iodine source. Our easy to swallow powder is sourced from whole plant kelp to provide all the trace nutrients found in this nutrient-dense whole food source. Suitable for vegans/vegetarians.
