NOW L-Phenylalanine
An essential amino acid and precursor to L-Tyrosine, which is necessary in the synthesis of proteins and some neurotransmitters. L-phenylalanine is classified as an essential amino acid for humans and therefore must be supplied in the diet, principally derived from dietary proteins. Those wishing to build additional muscle tissue may desire to consume essential amino acids.
L-phenylalanine is found in most protein rich foods, such as meat and dairy products, but it is also found in soy, bananas, and some seeds and nuts.L-phenylalanine is absorbed from the small intestine and transported to the liver. In the liver, L-phenylalanine is involved in a number of biochemical reactions, including protein synthesis, the formation of L-tyrosine, and oxidative catabolic reactions. L-phenylalanine that is not metabolized in the liver circulates to the various tissues of the body, where it undergoes metabolic reactions similar to those that take place in the liver. The first step of phenylalanine catabolism yields tyrosine. Tyrosine then undergoes a series of metabolic changes, leading to the formation of hormones. NOW uses only the natural, free form, L-stereoisomer in this formulation.
