NOW Valerian Root
Traditionally Used as a Sleep Aid. Insomnia affects approximately one-third of the adult population and contributes to increased rates of absenteeism, health care use, and social disability. Valerian is the world’s most popular Traditional Herbal sleep remedy.
Valerian root has a history of widespread use in North America and Europe since the mid-1800s for the treatment of restlessness and nervous sleep disturbances, and has been called the “valium of the 19th Century.” Valerian root may contain as many as 150 compounds, not all of which have been thoroughly investigated. The known major constituents are the valepotriates (irioid compounds such as valtrate and related analogs), volatile oils (monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, esters of valerianic and isovaleric acid), kessanes, valerenal, valeranone and valerenic acid (cyclopentane sesquiterpenes). The herb has a characteristic odour due to isovaleric acid and is reported to contain a “cat attractant,” actinidine. Valerian is well tolerated by most individuals.
