NOW Astragalus
Traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to tonify the lungs and is used for frequent colds. Astragalus is gaining popularity as an effective, alternative remedy for cold and flu season. In contrast to echinacea, long-term use of astragalus does not appear to suppress immune function. This is our most economical astragalus supplement.
Astragalus root (“huangqi” in Chinese) has been highly regarded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries as a superior adaptogen and restorative tonic. It is considered a sweet, warming herb with effects on the lung, spleen, and heart meridians. An adaptogen can increase general resistance to stress and disease and normalize disturbances in homeostasis produced by pathophysiological or environmental stimuli. The Chinese name, huangqi, can be interpreted as yellow leader. Astragalus root is used extensively in TCM to augment the Qi (vital energy) for spleen deficiency and deficiencies with spontaneous sweating. Traditionally, astragalus is combined with other adaptogenic herbs, such as ginseng, angelica, or licorice, and administered as a decoction, which is a strong tea.
