NOW Black Currant Oil
Source of essential fatty acids for the maintenance of good health. Black Currant oil a is preferred essential fatty acid supplement for some people as it is naturally rich in ALA (an essential Omega-3 fatty acid) as well as GLA (a conditionally essential Omega-6 fatty acid). These particular fatty acids are favoured by many female consumers and eliminate the need to take them in 2 separate supplements, such as flax oil and evening primrose oil (EPO). Black current oil also contains about 1.5 times more GLA than is found in a typical EPO supplement.
Black currant seed oil is obtained by pressing the seeds found in the fruit of black currant. NOW Black currant seed oil contains 14% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, and approximately 10% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. GLA may be beneficial for people who are unable to metabolize cis-linolenic acid to GLA, and produce adequate prostaglandin E1 (PGE-1). People with this condition have an imbalance in the ratio of inflammatory to non-inflammatory prostaglandins. GLA is thought to improve this ratio. GLA can be converted to compounds that have anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties, including prostaglandins with vasoactive properties. GLA also reduces production of interleukin 1 (IL-1)-beta, which may be involved in various inflammatory diseases.
