NOW Glutathione
An antioxidant for the maintenance of good health. Popularized by a number of self help health books, including the best-selling “The New Anti-Aging Revolution,” by Dr. Ronald Klatz and Dr. Robert Goldman, glutathione has been called the master antioxidant, because it recycles the antioxidants vitamins C and E and also helps to regulate immune cells and detoxify the body. These attributes and publicity have helped to increase demand among Canada’s aging Baby Boomers.
Glutathione is a tripeptide amino acid primarily synthesized in the liver from cysteine. Biochemically, it is involved in DNA synthesis and repair, protein and prostaglandin synthesis, amino acid transport, metabolism of toxins and carcinogens, immune system function, prevention of oxidative cell damage, and enzyme activation. It acts as a cellular antioxidant by inhibiting free radical proliferation. Glutathione deficiency is associated with aging, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetes, lung and gastrointestinal disease, pre-eclampsia, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, and poor prognosis in AIDS. Although glutathione is present in fruits, vegetables, and meats, the levels in the body do not seem to correlate to dietary intake, supporting the case for supplementation. NOW Glutathione is a reduced form of L-Glutathione. The term “reduced” refers to the non-oxidized stable form of Glutathione. NOW Glutathione is a high potency material made in Japan.
