NOW Indole-3-Carbinol
A source of antioxidants for the maintenance of good health. This unique combination of plant antioxidants is designed especially for women as indole-3-carbinol and flax lignans are also considered to be phytoestrogens.
Indole-3-carbinol is a constituent of cruciferous vegetables of the Brassica genus (e.g. broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, collards, cauliflower, kale, etc.). Daily dietary intake of indole-3-carbinol is typically 20-120 mg. In plant cells, indole-3-carbinol exists in the form of 3-indolylmethyl glucosinolate, which is then converted to indole-3-carbinol when the plant is cut or chewed; however, indole-3-carbinol is also produced synthetically. Indole-3-carbinol itself is not active. When indole-3-carbinol comes in contact with stomach acid it is converted to the active metabolites, diindolylmethane and indolylcarbazole. Research into the mode of action of indole-3-carbinol is ongoing. One pathway that has been confirmed is the induction of phase II enzymes in the liver, which seems to have a detoxifying effect by increasing water solubility and increasing excretion of carcinogenic toxins. Indole-3-carbinol induces cytochromes that alter estrogen metabolism. Flax lignans are included in this formula, because they are a source of secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, a mild phytoestrogen and an antioxidant.
