NOW Lycopene
A Naturally Sourced Antioxidant for the Maintenance of Good Health. Lycopene has the most potent antioxidant activity of any common carotenoid and as such, it is sought after as a natural preventative therapy for a wide variety of conditions.
Lycopene is a member of the carotenoid family of chemical substances. Lycopene is a natural fat-soluble pigment that gives tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit their characteristic red colour and protects these organisms against the toxic effects of oxygen and light. It is also a powerful antioxidant for humans. Processed tomato products are a more bioavailable dietary source of lycopene than fresh tomatoes. The average daily intake of lycopene is approximately 25 milligrams, with 50% of this in the form of processed tomatoes. Lycopene is a predominant carotenoid in blood and tissues. It is highly lipophilic and is commonly found within cellular membranes. Like other carotenoid substances, lycopene is transported in the blood and on LDL cholesterol, making it readily available to act as an antioxidant that scavenges free radicals and quenches singlet oxygen to prevent oxidative damage to DNA.
